A Traveler's Guide to Business Jets: Midsize Aircraft: Raytheon Hawker 800XP

  • Fluto Shinzawa

Under optimal conditions (fully fueled, a small number of passengers, no headwinds), a midsize business jet  can complete a flight from one U.S. coast to the other. However, these aircraft are better suited for shorter flights, such as transporting a family from Chicago to the Bahamas for a mid-winter vacation. They are fast enough to cover the distance before the children become too cranky, and they are spacious enough to carry plenty of luggage, including golf bags and fishing equipment. Charter rates start at $2,800 per hour, and a one-sixteenth fractional share (50 annual hours) costs approximately $1.1 million.

The Hawker 800XP, whose suffix stands for extended performance, was certified by the FAA in 1995 as the replacement for the Hawker 800. NetJets placed the largest single order for 800XPs, buying 20 aircraft in 1997. The aircraft’s galley can be equipped with a coffeemaker and microwave oven for guests who want refreshments during longer flights.
