A Second Chance to Own Safra Collectibles

Amanda Millin

Following the popular Property from the Collections of Lily and Edmond J. Safra auction in 2005, Sotheby’s is holding a second sale under the same title, with an estimated combined value of $40 million. From October 18 to 21, Sotheby’s New York will offer 1,500 lots of European furniture, silver, turned ivory, Russian porcelain, and 19th-century watercolors, all from the philanthropic couple’s own collection. Highlights of the four-day event are the Burghley Epergne, an English rococo centerpiece commissioned for the ninth Earl of Exeter in 1755, with a presale estimated value of $800,000, and a Louis XVI ormolu-mounted Japanese lacquer commode with a secretaire en suite, which is attributed to the renowned French master cabinetmaker, Adam Weisweiler, and has a presale estimated value of $5 million.
