Gagosian Shows Damien Hirst Around the World

  • Sheila Gibson Stoodley

For the first time, all 11 Gagosian galleries around the world will host the same show at the same time when Damien Hirst: The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 opens on January 12. The ambitious exhibit will feature around 300 of Hirst’s famous spot paintings shared across galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, Geneva, Athens, and Hong Kong. “It really originated with Damien, who had the idea,” says Millicent Wilner, director of the Gagosian gallery in London. “Our exhibits are usually unique to a particular gallery. This is going to be a first for us, and for Damien.”

Gagosian has been preparing the show for two years, coordinating loans from more than 150 individuals and institutions around the world and carefully planning each exhibit space. The artist is directly involved in shaping the show. “I have scaled-down models of each of the 11 galleries in my office,” Wilner says. “Damien has been coming in to plot it since January of 2011.” While the show includes works for sale, Gagosian declines to state how many are available or publish any prices. The Complete Spot Paintings continues through February 18. (www.gagosian.com)
