Old Masters in Paris

Sheila Gibson Stoodley

Old-master paintings are finally getting their own dedicated international art fair. Ten Parisian dealers of old masters have joined forces to launch Paris Tableau in the French capital. It takes place from November 4 to 8 and features 20 galleries, including Noortman Master Paintings of Amsterdam, Galeria Caylus from Madrid, and Stair Sainty Gallery of London.

Maurizio Canesso, director of Galerie Canesso and president of the group of 10 founders, will bring a Pompeo Batoni painting of Vulcan in his forge, dated 1750 and priced at €850,000 (about $1.15 million). “The strength of the figure is extremely beautiful,” he says. “We feel the fire and feel the presence of the god.”

Haboldt & Co. will offer a striking and unusual 1630s image of the goddess Flora for €125,000 (about $170,000). Vincenzo Mannozzi painted it on a piece of polished light gray marble measuring roughly 3 feet high, 2 feet wide, and 1 inch thick. “A marble plaque of this size is extremely rare,” says gallery founder Bob Haboldt.
