Parisian Socialite Hélène Rochas’s Collection at Christie’s

Zackary Peck

Hélène Rochas was considered the epitome of Parisian elegance. She lived in her 7th arrondissement apartment for more than 60 years and amassed an extraordinary collection of art and furnishings, including modern and postwar paintings and Art Deco furniture, which will be up for sale at Christie’s auction house in Paris on September 27.

The collection, valued at roughly $100 million, includes four portraits by Andy Warhol; Ben Nicholson’s 1933 abstract painting Violon et guitare, a testimony to the Abstract movements that led the 1930s art scene; and the enormous Portrait of Lucien Guitry by Edouard Vuillard (estimate: $186,000 to $310,000). Other works of art include a 1925 oil painting by Wassily Kandinsky, a large 1954 terra-cotta vase by Picasso, and several important Art Deco furnishings and accessories.

Rochas’s vast collection was heavily swayed by the Parisian social elite, including her friends Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, and includes exquisite works that pay tribute to both the inspirations of her past and some aspiring artists of today. (212.636.2000, www.christies.com)
