Rare Rembrandt and Goya Prints on the Block at Christie’s

Alexandra Foster

On December 8, Christie’s London auction house will hold its annual Old Master Prints sale. Prints from the 15th through the 18th centuries will be on the auction block, highlighting pieces from Francisco de Goya, Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, and Albrecht Dürer. Richard Lloyd, head of Christie’s London Old Master collection and curator of the sale, says this sale is an opportunity for new buyers to dive into the Old Master genre. These prints, Lloyd explains, “are the least speculative of the entire art world.” Included in the 96 lots is a rare complete set of The Bulls of Bordeaux from 1825 by Goya, the Spanish painter whose prints have emerged as some of the most original and innovative pieces from the period. The set, expected to sell for $300,000 to $450,000, is one of the first examples of the use of lithography in prints, and Goya’s work showcases the spontaneous and immediate results of printmaking.

More than 40 of Rembrandt’s works will be featured in the sale. Classic portraits and landscapes will be on hand from the Dutch painter, including A View of Amsterdam from the North West, estimated to sell for between $60,000 and $90,000. Christie’s sale of Old Master Prints will take place December 8 at the King Street auction house. (www.christies.com)
