Safra’s Art Collection on the Block at Sotheby’s

  • John Lyon

The impressive collection of art coming across the block at the Sotheby’s Important Old Master and 19th Century Paintings from the Collection of J.E. Safra is made all the more noteworthy when one considers that the entirety of the works to be sold are amassed from the personal collection of investor and avid art collector J.E. Safra, who intends to use the funds from the sale to purchase new pieces. Acquired by Safra between 1988 and 2001, the 197 lots up for bids cover a broad and diverse range of styles and artists. Highlights from the collection include Jacopo Amigoni’s Venus and Adonis, estimated to be worth between $1.5 and $2.5 million, and Piazzetta, Venice by master Italian landscapist Luca Carlevarijs, expected to fetch between $2 and $3 million. The entire collection will be exhibited at Sotheby’s New York during the five days leading up to the evening auction on January 26. (212.606.7230, www.sothebys.com)
