Sneak Peek: The Robert Rubin Collection at Sotheby’s

On May 13 Sotheby’s New York is auctioning the Robert Rubin Collection of African art, which comprises approximately 50 works of art estimated to sell for $4 million total. Collector Robert Rubin first started acquiring African art in the late 1970s, and he became a founding trustee for New York City’s Museum for African Art, traveling to Africa many times for research. His collection is one of the most important in the field, featuring some of the finest examples from each region and tribe. One of the collection’s most iconic works is the Songye Male Power Figure, encrusted with copper nails, estimated to fetch from $150,000 to $250,000. (212.894.1312, www.sothebys.com)
