From the first BMW Art Car, created by American artist Alexander Calder and commissioned by French racing driver Hervé Poulain in 1975, to important drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt van Rijn, there is something for everyone at The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) Maastricht’ssilver-anniversary celebration. To kick off its 25th year, the fair, held from March 16 to 25 at the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre, will unveil a new entrance hall adorned with a light installation by American artist Leo Villareal.

Among the top attractions this year: Hans P. Kraus Jr. Fine Photographs of New York will reveal an intimate photograph, titled Self-portrait, by painter Edgar Degas (circa 1895). The image, which shows Degas sitting by a shaded sculptural bust, is estimated at $90,000. The show also highlights a signed and dated gold, diamond, and enamel dragonfly pendant by René Lalique (1903), which will be brought by Epoque Fine Jewels from Belgium, and a signed and dated painting by Pieter Brueghel, titled The Harvest (1621), depicting peasants working in the field, that will be exhibited by De Jonckheere gallery of Paris. Additionally, Renaissance and Baroque art dealer Kunstkammer Georg Laue from Munich will be presenting a rare cup made from a coconut that was once owned by German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. The cup is one of only four surviving pieces of its kind and is expected to fetch more than $1 million. (+31.411.64.50.90, www.tefaf.com)
