Best of the Best 2012: Sports Cars: Audi R8 GT

Paul Dean

With a 560 hp v-10 engine snitched from the Lamborghini Gallardo, a top speed of 199 mph, and a zero-to-60-mph time of just a sniff over 3.5 seconds, the Audi R8 GT (www.audiusa.com) is a race-ready supercar by any definition. Foreign models come with a roll cage and competition bucket seats, and carbon fiber abounds. Factor in the coupe’s exclusivity (Audi will build only 333 and ship just 90 to the United States) and price (nearly $200,000), and the car squats parallel in status with any offerings from Ferrari, Porsche, or Audi’s corporate partner, Lamborghini. Even if it never visits a racetrack, the R8 GT is sufficiently comfortable, stylish, and luxurious to earn a place among life’s pleasures.
