Driving with the Top Down in BMW’s Z4 sDrive35is

  • Paul Meyers

When it comes to sporty roadsters—or cars with names that double as tongue twisters—the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is hard to beat. Saying the car’s full model designation aloud may not be its best selling point, but it does drive home the fact that this hardtop convertible is BMW’s range-topping Z4 model.

Equipped with the same 3-liter twin-turbocharged engine found in the bigger 335i, this petite powerhouse produces 335 horsepower and 332 foot- pounds of torque. The German automaker claims that is enough oomph to motivate the two-seater to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds, but it actually feels much faster than that—especially with the wind whooshing over the top of your head.

Robb Report was given the chance to put this roadster through its paces on the winding coastline of California’s Monterey Bay, and it did not disappoint. Our test car was not fitted with BMW’s optional navigation system, but its ability to maneuver on the road made getting lost an unintentional blessing. The interior boasted a no-frills finish, as if to say that the sDrive35is was built to appease owners who appreciate sport over luxury.

With a price tag of $61,500, however, this particular Z4 should probably be wearing an M badge. It would certainly make talking about the car a lot easier. (www.bmwusa.com)
