FrontRunners: Fierce Featherweight
Since 1967, Bologna, Italy–based NCR has been dazzling the motorcycle world with its Ducati makeovers, shrouding the Italian racers in functional excesses of rare metals and composite materials. The company’s latest model, the NCR Millona 16 (www.ncrfactory.com), begins as a V-4 Ducati Desmosedici RR. NCR refits the RR’s engine with titanium and aircraft-grade-aluminum components and then wraps the powerplant in a carbon-fiber chassis. The bike’s fuel tank, fairing, subframe, fenders, and rims also are made of carbon fiber—thus the Millona 16’s astonishing 319-pound dry weight. NCR produces each M16 upon request only, for a price that starts at about $160,000, plus the $72,500 cost of an RR.
