FrontRunners: Spyder in the Grass

Dutch automaker Spyker Cars unveiled its latest convertible model in August at the 59th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Displayed on the show’s concept lawn, the first preproduction Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder (www.spykercars.com) wore a coat of shiny silver paint and a bright-orange semiautomatic ragtop, which retracts to reveal Spkyer’s handcrafted leather interior. The production Aileron Spyder (see "Dutch Treat," rel="nofollow" page 225) will share many traits with its coupe counterpart, including all-aluminum body construction and a two-seat, mid-engine layout. An Audi-sourced V-8 engine with 395 hp and 354 ft lbs of torque (enough to reach 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 187 mph) will be paired with a manual 6-speed transmission. For the first time Spyker will also offer an optional automatic transmission. Official production is slated for early 2010, and the car is expected to have a premium above the $214,990 starting price of the Aileron coupe.
