Lamborghini Unveils the Fearsome Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce

Adrenaline junkies bored by, say, base jumping or running with the bulls in Pamplona—or by Automobili Lamborghini’s standard 640-horsepower Murciélago coupe and roadster—will find much to love in the Italian automaker’s new top bull. Dubbed the Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce, the ne plus ultra of the Lamborghini range is both significantly lighter and notably more powerful than its lesser siblings. The designation is a mouthful: “LP” for Longitudinale Posteriore, referring to the engine’s longitudinal (north-south) orientation and rear-end placement; “670” for the horsepower figure; “-4” for the four driven wheels; and SuperVeloce, which translates from Italian as, appropriately enough, “superfast.” A bumper-to-bumper, part-by-part analysis of the car—everything from chassis and power train components to body panels and cabin trim—yielded a total weight savings of 220 pounds. At the same time, Lamborghini’s engineers reconsidered the Murciélago’s already-ferocious 6.5-liter V-12, installing a new, freer-flowing exhaust system and liberating an additional 30 horsepower. The bottom line: 60 mph arrives in a staggering 3.2 seconds, and the SuperVeloce now rampages to 212 mph. (The optional Aeropack rear wing, pictured here, dramatically augments downforce but cuts top speed by 3 mph, to a mere 209 mph.) Lamborghini plans to build only 350 examples of its “exceptionally purist” SuperVeloce—a few of which will indeed make the trip to America—priced approximately 20 percent higher than the standard Murciélago LP640 coupe, or about $440,000.(www.lamborghini.com)
