Robb Design Portfolio: Beautiful Birdcage: 1959 Maserati Tipo 61

  • The Editors

Resembling the intricate fossilized remains of an ancient flying reptile, the frame of the fabled Maserati “Birdcage” is an assemblage of over 200 steel segments wrapped in a svelte aluminum skin. This fabulous sports racer was designed by Giulio Alfieri, Maserati’s chief design en-gineer, and a total of 21 examples were produced between 1959 and 1961. The Tipo 61’s 2.9-liter, 4-cylinder engine developed250 bhp and topped out at 165 mph. Unquestionably one of the most important Italian cars ever built, and perhaps the greatest Maserati of them all, a Tipo 60 recently brought more than $2 million at Christie’s, making it an undisputed classic investment for a serious enthusiast.
