Fighter Pilot Fantasy Camp

Mary Grady

Two days, four vintage airplanes, and 80 minutes of flying comprise the Dixie Wing Fighter Pilot Fantasy Camp in Atlanta. No flying experience is needed to participate. Campers start in the Stearman biplane, then try out the PT-26 Cornell and a T-6 Texan before graduating to the P-51 Mustang, the most famous of the World War II–era fighters. Along the way, participants learn about the history and operation of each airplane from experienced pilots and war veterans. Modern fighter pilots also share their experiences and discuss the evolution of fighter tactics. The camp runs May 14-15 and costs $3,200; meals and accommodations are included.
