FrontRunners: Vision in Sight

Cirrus Aircraft, manufacturer of the SR22 personal piston plane, a repeat Robb Report Best of the Best selection, is adding a personal jet to its lineup. The company, which is based in Duluth, Minn., recently got word that its owner, a Chinese aircraft manufacturer, would finance the production of the Cirrus Vision SF50 (www.cirrusaircraft.com). Cirrus expects to begin deliveries in 2015 and has set the price of the jet at $1.96 million. The single-engine V-tail jet is expected to cruise as fast as 345 mph and as high as 28,000 feet and have a range of 1,380 miles. A full-airframe parachute (a trademark of Cirrus piston planes that the company says has been deployed in about 30 instances and has saved 53 lives) will be built into the jet. Cirrus will make the cockpit an easy step up for pilots accustomed to piston aircraft by equipping it with similar controls and a host of automated features. The jet will seat as many as five adults and two children.
