Waco Goes Modern

  • Mary Grady

For pure flying pleasure it’s hard to beat an open-cockpit biplane, and now pilots can enjoy that classic experience in a brand-new Waco with a modern computerized instrument panel. Waco Classic Aircraft, in Battle Creek, Michigan, builds each fully certified, lovingly crafted airplane by hand and to order. The top-of-the-line YMF-5D loops and rolls with a gentle nudge and powers into climbs with a 300 horsepower fuel-injected radial engine. The big bright panel provides weather and traffic information, GPS navigation, and all the data you need to fly blind in the clouds if you must, but the best place for a biplane is still the sunny, wide blue sky. Prices for the YMF-5D Super start at $395,500. (269.565.1000, www.wacoclassic.com)
