As a successful entrepreneur, Darioush’s proprietor, Darioush Khaledi, sought to marry the winemaking traditions of his native Iran to the terroir of Napa Valley. Among the wines produced at the palatial facility along the Silverado Trail are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and, of course, Shiraz, the Persian grape that, in France’s Rhône region, would become Syrah. But one of the most unusual and delightful of Darioush winemaker Steve Devitt’s wines is the fascinating and ethereal Viognier, which combines concentration with an oddly elusive, otherworldly quality that makes one think of sunlight and moonlight blended. Thick with heady scents of jasmine, orange blossom, and honeysuckle, the Darioush Signature Viognier 2004 produces an intense, lush melon flavor on the palate before evaporating in a finish as delicate as a mirage.
