Best Of The Best 2006: Back To The Future

Although decidedly contemporary, the Breguet Tradition really is a throwback to the 18th century. The piece’s groundbreaking aesthetics rely on company founder Abraham-Louis Breguet’s mechanical flourishes and finishing techniques—from the movement’s frosted finish to its symmetrical design featuring a modern construction of his so-called “parachute” antishock device—all of which are visible through the crystal. These elements are significant not for their complication or exclusivity, but because the design makes a direct connection with Breguet the man, whose legacy is one of the most fascinating aspects of the brand. The Tradition suggests that, were he alive today, Breguet still would be considered a radical designer.
