Best Of The Best 2006: Deep Waters

James D. Malcolmson

The Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk II Pro Challenger of Record Flying Tourbillon is the latest salvo in the battle of the extreme tourbillons. With a massive titanium case and two special gas release valves, the Sea Hawk, which will be limited to 32 pieces, is rated for depths as great as 3,000 meters. With any luck, that rating will not be tested by the members of the BMW/Oracle America’s Cup syndicate, to which Girard-Perregaux dedicated the watch. In fact, even if the boat were to sink in the deepest waters off Valencia, the Sea Hawk’s tourbillon cage could continue to spin, having descended only halfway to its depth limit.
