Best Of The Best 2006: Deutsch Treat

A. Lange & Söhne, a company that closed down for some 40 years and then ascended back to watchmaking’s summit in little more than a decade, overcame another formidable challenge last year, when it created a truly feminine German watch. This was a goal that the practical, male-oriented watchmakers in Glashütte had struggled with for years. Ultimately, Lange found the design right under its nose in the form of its original and most identifiable men’s model: the Lange 1. Remarkably, the company had to make only minimal changes to the men’s model to transform it into the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Little Soirée. The company had used the Soirée’s small, 36 mm case previously (and unsuccessfully) for a men’s line marketed to Asia. But Lange was able to change the character of the men’s design completely just by replacing the dial with one made of colored mother-of-pearl and adding a matching strap and a diamond bezel. After originally releasing the Soirée in shades of rose and champagne in quantities of 20 each, the company expanded its palette of colors and its production runs. A stylish chocolate version is due in a few months, proving that even sober Teutons can have a keen fashion sense.
