Best Of The Best 2006: Far South Of The Border

Anthony Dias Blue

Globe-trotting winemaker Paul Hobbs, perhaps known best for his California Chardonnays, seems as at home in Mendoza, Argentina, as he is in the Russian River Valley or on Sonoma Mountain—regions of the world unified by their excellent vines. His Cobos 2003 Malbec, its fruit sourced as usual from the superb Marchiori Vineyard of Andrea Marchiori, is deep and brooding, with intensely tuned plum and blackberry flavors and extraordinary length.
