Best Of The Best 2006: Mountain Air

Mike Nolan

AEXJet has grown far beyond its home in the Rockies.

Today, only 20 percent of its flights transit through Aspen, Colo., and the

company’s core territory has expanded to include the entire continental United

States, southern Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Practices instituted for

mountain flight still provide an extra cushion of safety, however, and each

pilot flies only one aircraft type, giving him added familiarity with the

plane’s flight characteristics.

AEXJet’s program works like a debit

card, with three levels of membership: Silver membership, which requires a

deposit of $100,000, yields nine to 29 flight hours, depending on the type and

size of the aircraft flown; Gold, which costs $250,000, provides 22 to 75 hours;

and Platinum, which requires $500,000, yields 43 to 160 hours.
