Best Of The Best 2006: Nature Study

Nicholas Varney’s latest work emphasizes what he calls the “deconstructionism” of jewelry, which he likens to a movement in the art world. “I’m stepping away from traditional representation and creating the unexpected,” says the 34-year-old Varney, who operates a workshop in New York City but also spends time at his home in the Irish countryside and on remote island beaches looking for inspiration for his designs. “I want people to look at a piece, think about it, and perhaps not recognize it immediately.” One such piece is his sunflower brooch made of Tennessee stick pearls, canoe-shaped peridots, green tourmalines, moonstones, and diamond accents.
