Best Of The Best 2006: New Frontier

Mark Twain once described Mauritius as “God’s blueprint for Heaven.” Today, the Indian Ocean island is fast becoming an ultimate destination for golfers, with five championship courses—four of which have opened since 2002. The most recent addition to Mauritius’ greenery is the Golf du Château Course at the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort on the island’s southern tip.

South African architect Peter Matkovitch built Golf du Château on a former sugar estate, routing the front nine along a flat wetlands stretch marked by two rivers. Several holes play around Le Château de Bel Ombre, a magnificent stone manor house that holds the resort’s restaurant. The back nine climbs into the adjacent foothills, affording views of the resort and ocean. The two disparate halves combine to produce a 7,088-yard layout that, with its thick rough, confounding bunkering, and problematic greens, may prompt some players to concur with Twain that “Golf is a good walk spoiled.”
