Best Of The Best 2006: Up To The Challenge

  • Joseph E. Burnside

Bombardier’s Learjet, Challenger, and Global brands already have significant market share, but the company is not resting on its laurels. Its latest entry, the Bombardier Challenger 605, further refines the industry’s original wide-body business jet.

First announced in November 2005, the 12-passenger 605 is an impressive update of the company’s 604. Among other changes, Bombardier has incorporated a new Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics system into a redesigned interior that features a digital, Ethernet-based cabin entertainment system and enlarged windows for more natural light. The 605 also has a payload capacity that is 200 pounds greater than that of the 604.

The jet achieves a cruising speed of 540 mph and a range of about 4,600 miles. A prototype completed its maiden flight earlier this year, and certified examples are scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2007, priced at about $26.7 million.
