Best Of The Best 2006: Wild Oaks

  • James D. Malcolmson

Swiss watches have displayed some ridiculous affectations (feather boa straps?) in the name of haute couture. However, the Audemars Piguet Oak Leaves Collection, a series of three Lady Royal Oak watches, flaunts more sensible Swiss style. Diamonds and sapphires set in oak leaf and arabesque patterns embellish the case and dial, and these same curvaceous motifs, which are modeled on the traditional Swiss embroidery of St. Gallen, distinguish the elaborate embroidered and beaded silk straps. Audemars Piguet’s gem setters, who are among the most precise in the business, have managed to create the Oak Leaves’ swirling patterns without limiting the watch’s wearability, which is a rare feat with high jewelry pieces.
