Best Of The Best 2006: Winged Victory

  • Joseph E. Burnside

The Raytheon Hawker 850XP,  which debuted last year, has been given new composite-construction winglets—vertical wing tips—to enhance both the performance and the appearance of the proven Hawker 800 design. The modification boosts the nine-passenger jet’s range to about 3,040 miles and also produces quicker climbs and faster cruise speeds, reducing total travel time. Less quantifiable but still significant is the winglets’ contribution to the plane’s enhanced ramp presence.

The 850XP also is more durable than the previous model: It can fly 600 hours, instead of 300, before requiring scheduled maintenance. Raytheon announced the $13.8 million jet’s certification in March, and deliveries began soon afterward.
