Best of the Best 2008: Decor: Closet Systems: Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild

  • William Kissel

Although custom cabinetry for kitchens, libraries, and living rooms is still the primary business of the family-owned Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild, growing demand for quality closets prompted the Naples, Fla.–based company to introduce a new line of closet systems this year. Traditionally, the design and installation process for a Thomas Riley closet system might take up to six months and cost as much as $1 million. However, the new collection affords clients the same high quality and detail, but delivered in a fraction of the time and at a lower cost. "We’re trying to make it more accessible without sacrificing high-quality details such as solid wood dovetailed drawer boxes," says Matt Riley, son of the company’s founder.

Clients can choose from a variety of woods, including wenge, mahogany, and white oak. Preconfigured units—including automated clothing carousels and shoe racks, as well as drawer systems designed to hold jewelry and watches—come in pre-engineered dimensions for easy integration into most closets. "The client is still selecting the wood, color, and configuration, but the shapes, sizes, and details have already been developed, so the client is not paying a premium to produce a prototype," Riley says. The service starts at around $1,000 per linear foot (including installation) and typically takes about two months from order to installation.
