Best of the Best 2008: Decor: Paint: Benjamin Moore

Skye Mayring

Few consider paint a luxury, but Aura, Benjamin Moore’s new line of high-performance interior paint, may change a few minds—and turn a few heads. "In our own factory, we formulated a special, patent-pending acrylic latex to make a durable product that could last indefinitely," explains Carl Minchew, director of color technology for Benjamin Moore. The self-priming, 100 percent acrylic paint contains a waterborne colorant that embeds itself in the binding agent, protecting the coating from scrubbing, rubbing, washing, and fading. In addition to maintaining a consistent sheen, the Aura paint contains a low-volatile-organic-compound (low-VOC) formulation, at around 50 grams per liter, that dramatically lessens its atmospheric impact. The eco-friendly paint can be produced in more than 3,400 colors and in three finishes: matte, eggshell, and satin. "It’s the next generation of paint," Minchew says. "We’re looking at Aura as the beginning of many more products to come based on its platform."
