Best of the Best 2011: Resorts: Pioneer Camp 1926 Londolozi

Pioneer Camp 1926 Londolozi (+27. 11.280.6655, www.londolozi.co.za) is the newest of five individually run, small-scale safari lodges along the Sand River in South Africa’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The settlements belong to Londolozi, one of Africa’s original (dating to 1926) and most luxurious private reserves.

Opened last June, the new camp consists of just three self-contained suites and a central lodge surrounded by ebony trees. From each suite, vast sliding doors lead to a deck with an outdoor shower and a swimming pool. Guests need not leave the deck—or even emerge from bed—to view local wildlife, although early morning game drives followed by bacon and eggs cooked over an open fire are well worth the sunrise wake-up call.

Londolozi guests are almost guaranteed leopard sightings on their daily drives, which are led by friendly guides with plenty of personal anecdotes from the bush. (From about $1,400 per person, per night)
