21 Ultimate Gifts: A Ticket to Wally World

Luca Bassani antivari may have allowed his then-young son to name his first yacht, and thus his company, after the cartoon character Wally Gator, but there is nothing silly about the way this economist-turned-yachting entrepreneur approaches vessel innovation. Since 1993, Bassani has been collaborating with naval architect Luca Brenta to build fast, light, safe, and stylish sailing yachts from carbon fiber.

Even if Wally yachts did not offer high-performance hydrodynamics, they would be appreciated for their unique appearances and innovative configurations. For its soon-to-be completed 143-foot sloop, Wally has reworked the traditional sailboat interior and placed the salon aft so that it looks onto the open cockpit and creates, in effect, a terrace on the sea. In the Wally Power 118, the company has produced a 71 mph (62 knot) motor yacht with a superstructure that evokes the Crystal Cathedral.

To control quality, Bassani and Wally have grown from an R&D house to a full-service yacht builder that offers power and sailing boats ranging in length from 33 to 143 feet. The Monaco-based company constructs all of its yachts in Fano, Italy, where it vacuum-bags hull sections for optimal strength-to-weight ratios and then cures them for hours in gigantic 50-meter ovens.

The company is offering a Robb Report reader a fleet of six Wally boats: the 33-foot Wally Dinghy, a 43 mph (38 knot) open vessel that can transport as many as eight passengers; the 45-foot Wally Tender; the 70-foot Wally Power; the Wally Power 118; the 100-foot Dark Shadow sailboat; and a new 180-foot megayacht that Wally can custom build for you.

Among the vessels in the fleet is the aforementioned Wally Power 118, whose designers employed Ferrari’s wind tunnel when creating its shape. In addition to its performance capabilities, the 118 has a stunning deckhouse. Its laminated-glass and carbon superstructure offers 360-degree views and free-flowing spaces: The dining room becomes the board room, and the flush foredeck becomes an alfresco lounge. The 118 features a spacious master suite and two guest staterooms, crew quarters for six, and indoor or outdoor dining for 14.

The 45-foot Wally Tender is the perfect Range Rover–style day cruiser. You also can order it as an overnighter—called a Wally Power—with a raised deck that encloses two cabins and a galley.

The Wally Power 70 comes in three configurations, but the lunch boat version, with two cabins, a large changing room, and plenty of deck space, is a favorite among Mediterranean boaters.

Representing Wally’s sailboats is Dark Shadow, a turnkey 100-footer customized by Foster and Partners, the renowned firm of Sir Norman Foster, and built—including the sails—from carbon fiber. It can accommodate six passengers and four crew members, but push-button sail controls enable one person to operate the boat.

The 180-foot megayacht will feature a top speed of 18 mph (16 knots) and an 861-square-foot main salon. The glass superstructure will flood the interior with sunlight and provide 360-degree views from the upper decks.

PRICE
Starting at $75.5 million.

The 180-foot yacht requires at least three years to complete; the other five vessels are available immediately.
