While many of today’s shipbuilders are more frequently employing composite materials, Serbian shipyard Art of Kinetik, founded in 2007, continues producing boats from wood. Its newest weekend cruiser model, Antagonist, is 37 feet long and features a hull crafted completely from African mahogany, which, according to the company, is lighter and stronger than plastics and more resistant to wear and fatigue than metal. Visually, Antagonist is an amalgam of a 1920s wooden runabout and aggressive contemporary design, with an open teak deck that seats eight. The cruiser’s deep-V hull allows hydroplaning at high speeds and provides additional stability, contributing to a smooth ride. Powered by two Yanmar 8LV-370 engines, the Antagonist has a top speed of 42 knots and can maintain a cruising speed of 33 knots. Belowdecks, the Antagonist sports a spacious leather-clad living space and full head. (www.artofkinetik.com)
