Chartered Territories: Under the Tahitian Moon

Jill Bobrow

A vessel the caliber of Charlatan is an anomaly in the South Pacific, which, unlike the Caribbean, suffers from a paucity of crewed luxury yachts. This is unfortunate when you consider that this region, including the islands of Tahiti that we visited on our charter, is as exotic today as it was when Captain Cook ventured here in 1768.

Alloy Yachts in New Zealand built the 110-foot Charlatan, and Ron Holland designed her for maximum sailing performance: Good winds enabled us to push 12 knots en route to Bora-Bora, from the island of Tahaa, where we saw how black pearls are cultivated, and from Raiatea, where we saw how they are sold everywhere—in produce markets, clothing stores, even post card shops.

Charlatan features an exquisite teak interior—including a main salon, pilothouse, and dining area—by British design firm Redman Whiteley Dixon. Among the three guest cabins is a master suite with two bathrooms and an aft stairway that leads to a private cockpit, where the curved settee and coffee table can be transformed into a large lounging bed that is ideal for stargazing.

Charlatan will remain in the South Pacific through September, before sailing to the Caribbean for the winter and then to the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea next summer.
