Concept Boat Provides Inventive Solutions

Yachting journalists are often asked which charter yachts offer up the most equitable staterooms for those couples or families wanting to vacation with another group. Sailing with others on a yacht unquestionably provides quality time with the other members of the party, but how to divvy up those divine quarters equitably often becomes an issue.

Pasadena, California–based Art Center College of Design student Jorge Jabor Pinheiro has solved the conundrum. He has created plans for Sahodara, a 92-meter steel-and-aluminum motor yacht that boasts a rotating owners’ deck. This deck features two master suites—each with a forward-facing view, thanks to the rotating deck. It rotates 200-plus degrees and back, providing plenty of panoramic visuals.

Pinheiro conceived the design with two brothers in mind—two brothers who wanted to share the yacht and share their time. To that effect, the top-deck owners’ level houses two master suites, separated by the elevator lobby. Among its five decks, the yacht will accommodate a total of 12 guests in its two owners’ suites and four VIP staterooms, plus 27 crew. In addition to the ample social spaces, guests will probably notice the waterfall that cascades down several decks to the main-deck pool.

In a nod to efficiency, Pinheiro designed Sahodara with a diesel-electric power train to minimize the carbon footprint. Biodiesel can reduce the CO2 further. Azimuthing propulsion pods give it maneuverability, and the designer took care in providing the latest technology in waste treatment. Pinheiro planned Sahodara with a maximum cruise speed of 20 knots and a cruise speed of 16, giving it a 6,000-nautical-mile range.

And while Sahodara (“brother” in Sanskrit) has yet to find an owner, the award-winning Pinheiro is optimistic. “I would be more than willing to turn it into a real yacht should anyone be interested,” he enthused. (626.524.0035, jorgejabor@gmail.com)
