FrontRunners: Pod Power

The 55-foot Azimut 55S (www.azimutyachts.com) is the first boat in the Azimut Benetti Group’s S series of sport cruisers to employ Volvo’s triple IPS pod-drive propulsion system. The system is light and small, allowing for roomier interiors; the 55S’s three-cabin layout sleeps as many as six people. At the boat’s stern, a carbon-fiber garage door measuring more than 8 feet wide folds down and lowers hydraulically into the water to serve as a swim platform or a launch for the yacht’s 9-foot rigid inflatable tender. The price of the Azimut 55S is available upon request.
