The Toys of Summer: Showstopper

  • Sea-Doo GTX Limited iS 255

Like other personal-watercraft makers, Sea-Doo voluntarily limits the top speed of its machines to 65 mph. Still, the company’s latest top-of-the-line model—the $16,500 Sea-Doo GTX Limited iS 255—blows past the competition by setting high-water marks for comfort and maneuverability.

Sea-Doo claims that the GTX, powered by a 255 hp engine, can reach 50 mph in just 3.5 seconds. And though other personal watercraft offer comparable power, none have the tools necessary to bring that motion to a halt. The GTX, however, uses a reverse-thrust braking system that, if necessary, allows you to stop the craft swiftly enough to dip its nose underwater.

The GTX also features a suspension system that provides 6 inches of separation between the lower hull and the passenger surface, with automatic or manual stiffness settings. The automatic suspension adjusts to the aggressiveness of your driving, becoming softer at moderate speeds and firmer during high-velocity rides.
