A Playful Bang & Olufsen

Amanda Millin

B&O Play is a new Bang & Olufsen division focused on personal media playback, and its first product, the Beolit 12, is a playful take on the boom box. The 9-by-7-by-5-inch portable music system, available in four colors—dark gray, light gray, yellow, and blue—arrived at B&O’s U.S. showrooms and Apple stores around the country this month. Priced at $799, the Beolit 12 pays tribute to B&O’s Beolit 600 portable transistor radio from the 1960s. The new product features a convenient Italian-leather handle, a storage compartment for the power cord, and a rechargeable battery, which allows for eight hours of wireless music playback.

The Beolit 12 delivers relatively powerful bass, thanks to a 4-inch subwoofer and an onboard 120-watt digital power amplifier, as well as an impressive level of detail for a speaker of this size, courtesy of dual 2-inch tweeters—and it does so without the use of wires. The Beolit 12 utilizes Apple AirPlay to wirelessly transmit music from Apple personal devices and computers. It also features a nonslip rubber tray on top of the speaker to ensure iPhone and iPod touch devices can be safely carried without falling.  The portable sound system can also sync to a wireless network to play music stored on a PC from virtually anywhere in your home.
