Bang & Olufsen’s BeoPlay A9 Delivers Good Looks and Wireless Music

  • Jason Victor Serinus

It is no wonder that the BeoPlay A9 self-powered loudspeaker system, the most powerful performer from Bang & Olufsen’s sister brand B&O Play, won a coveted “Best of Innovations” award at the January 2013 Consumer Electronics Show. Not only is the design eye-catchingly gorgeous—the execution as trim and sophisticated as the industry has come to expect from Bang & Olufsen—but the system’s 480 watts of power is ear-opening, to say the least. Virtually concealed in this conversation piece is a 2.1-bass-reflex loudspeaker system that combines five speaker units and amps with a proprietary DSP (digital-signal processor) algorithm to tightly control the 8-inch bass unit. Tailored for the digital world, the unit can wirelessly stream music, and volume can be adjusted via Apple iPhone and iPad or Android-based devices. Users can also control the volume, as if by magic, by waving a hand over a sensor. Available in a variety of colors, the BeoPlay A9 sits on a trio of wooden legs or can be mounted on the wall. Prices begin at $2,699. (866.520.1400, www.beoplay.com)
