FrontRunners: Best Buds

Engineers at the Austrian audio company AKG spent several years developing the AKG K3003 (www.akg.com), a $1,300 pair of earbuds that offers the detail and imaging of circumaural headphones in a considerably more convenient package. The Vienna-based manufacturer’s new buds, which began shipping to eager audiophiles in December, incorporate a three-way hybrid driver system that captures clean bass responses down to 10 Hz. A pair of balanced armatures handles middle and high frequencies, allowing listeners to pick up seldom-heard sounds on favorite tracks.
