Harman Upgrades the Eargle Theater

Harman International in Northridge, Calif., is one of the country’s largest research centers for developing cutting-edge loudspeaker technology. At this massive 44-acre site just north of Los Angeles, Harman manufactures many of the vast array of products across the AKG, Harman/Kardon, Infinity, Lexicon, Mark Levinson, and JBL brands that fall under its corporate umbrella. Also located at this facility is a private theater that Harman uses to showcase its highest-end commercial and home theater product brand, JBL Synthesis (www.jblsynthesis.com).

The group’s latest news is a significant upgrade of the Eargle Theater, named for legendary Harman engineer John M. Eargle, in which the company now demonstrates the latest and greatest JBL Synthesis and other high-end product lines. Here, Harman frequently hosts potential customers, as well as dealers and installers, such as DSI Entertainment Systems (www.dsientertainment.com), one of Southern California’s leading home audio-video integrators. The list of new equipment in the theater includes a trio of JBL Project Everest DD66000 loudspeakers (priced at about $60,000 per pair) for the left, right, and center channels; six JBL S4Ai THX Ultra2 surround-sound speakers; four JBL S1S-EX 18-inch THX Ultra2 subwoofers; and a slew of JBL Synthesis amps and a Mark Levinson surround-sound processor. A Digital Projection International Titan 3D three-chip DLP projector (www.digitalprojection.com) provides video to the 180-inch Screen Research acoustically transparent film screen (www.screenresearch.com), while an automation system from Savant (www.savantsystems.com) ensures all that gear can be seamlessly controlled.

With these upgrades, the system in Harman’s Eargle Theater now even more accurately represents the company’s high level of audio standards—and gives those looking to build or upgrade their home theater something to aspire to. (www.harman.com)
