MartinLogan’s Latest ESL Electrostat

  • Jeff Dorgay

For the last 25 years, legendary electrostatic loudspeaker manufacturer MartinLogan has been refining the hybrid design of its speakers, which typically feature a curved electrostatic panel mated to a cone woofer. The newest evolution of this design, the Montis, manages to achieve flagship-grade audio quality—thanks to technologies borrowed from the company’s famed ESL line, which includes the $24,495-per-pair CLX—in a more compact package that looks as salient in an art gallery as it does in the finest listening room.

The Montis features a svelte 11.3-inch-wide ESL electrostatic panel comprising a lighter-than-air diaphragm sandwiched between MartinLogan’s MicroPerf stators to deliver light and airy audio with the utmost precision and delicacy. For a bit of oomph, it utilizes a 10-inch cone woofer—an onboard 24-bit digital-signal processor manages the power from the speaker’s 200-watt amplifier—delivering an extended bass response that integrates seamlessly with the speaker’s electrostatic panel. After a recent thorough review, the Montis ($9,995 per pair) admirably exemplifies the quality of audio reproduction for which MartinLogan has so long been revered.
