Ghurka Debuts New Flagship

One look at Ghurka’s new flagship store on Fifth Avenue at 59th Street, and it’s clear the 30-year-old tried-and-true, classic leather-goods company has evolved into a more contemporary brand. At the center of store is a racy motorcycle used as a prop for the expansive line of leather accessories, from casual-style twill carryalls to preppy plaid tote bags to tailored houndstooth-patterned duffle bags. Under the direction of its new creative director, Steven La Guardia, Ghurka has refreshed some of its all-time favorite leather goods, including briefcases and travel items, and revisited designs such as the Eagle leather and twill golf bag ($6,500).

Even the new designs, though, reflect the brand’s classic heritage. The Ghurka brand was started 30 years ago in Connecticut by Marley Hodgson, who was inspired by the antique travel gear and leather boots worn by British Ghurka officers at the turn of the 20th century. He strived to re-create the unique qualities of the leather and twill accessories featuring durable yet supple leather that carried a unique lustrous finish. His classically rugged styles gained a loyal following, and La Guardia is targeting the next generation of Ghurka customers with more contemporary styles. (212.826.8300, www.ghurka.com)
