The Personal Touch

Patrick McDonough caught the knitting bug four years ago when his good friend, Michigan-based handbag designer Barbara May, offered to teach him a few simple steps. “I just had an emotional connection with the art,” says the Manhattan-based McDonough, who says the lesson recalled memories of his mother knitting him sweaters as a child. He hasn’t put down the needles since.

Last year, the former Emmy Award–winning motion graphics executive turned his newfound passion into a second career with the launch of Edward Joseph, a collection of one-of-a-kind handmade scarves sold online and through the brand’s newly opened shop on Greenwich Street in New York.

Named for his late father (“because McDonough is sort of a mouthful,” says the designer) and made from a combination of silk, mohair, hand-spun wool, alpaca, and cashmere, every scarf is hand-knit by McDonough and ranges in price from $500 to $1,700 depending on the materials, gauge, and size. The scarves, which can take as long as 20 hours to create, are completely customizable in your choice of yarn and color combination, as well as size, and come adorned with a loose dangling single tassel, a detail that has become the label’s signature. “Anyone who has ever received a gift made by hands knows they are made with love,” adds McDonough.
