Elements of Style

Jill Newman and James D. Malcolmson

Silhouette’s aviator-style sunglasses ($319) are high-performance gear for the eyes, featuring polarized gray- or brown-tinted lenses to minimize glare and an ultralight titanium frame that conforms to the shape of the face. Angelo Galasso’s python leather driving gloves ($830) are equally stylish and roadworthy, providing a supple layer of insulation for long stretches behind the wheel. Although the Italian leather-goods manufacturer Tod’s did not invent the driving shoe, the company’s founder, Dorino Della Valle, certainly perfected it. In the late 1950s, Della Valle designed a softer, sleeker version of the casual slip-on called the Gommino ($445). The shoe is available in a range of new colors this season and comes equipped with Della Valle’s original sole design, which features 133 rubber “pebbles” for comfort and grip. One glance at the vertical dial on the Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti Vitesse ($325,000) reveals that this timepiece is designed for the road. The latest edition of the Bugatti watch series, an homage to Bugatti’s Veyron supercar, is made to be read while the wearer’s hands are on the wheel, and its mechanics resemble an automotive differential, redirecting the axis of rotation 90 degrees from the movement to the dial. What’s more, the model’s sleek matte- and polished-titanium case boasts at least as many exotic curves as anything parked in the garage.  Parmigiani Fleurier, +41.32.862.66.30, www.parmigiani.ch  —James D.
