FrontRunner: Scripps' Second Act

  • Nancy Wong Bryan

After purchasing the former Scripps family mansion on San Diego’s Bankers Hill, entrepreneur Gordon Hattersley III commenced a renovation that would be respectful of the historic home yet appropriate for its intended use. “We didn’t want to make this place like a museum,” says Hattersley of the Britt Scripps Inn (888.881.1991, www.brittscrippsinn.com), his new nine-room boutique hotel set in the Victorian-style structure. “It was important to keep it authentic and maintain its character without overdoing it.”

Built in 1887 by attorney Eugene Britt for $3,000, the Bankers Hill home belonged to the Scripps newspaper family for more than four decades. Hattersley worked with the local historical society during his two-year renovation of the property, and the Britt Scripps, which opened in February, pairs period interiors and original redwood accents with modern conveniences (flat-screen televisions, high-speed Internet ports) and necessities (private bathrooms; the home previously had only three). The inn is located just one block west of San Diego’s 1,200-acre Balboa Park; rates begin at $205 per night.
