FrontRunners: 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

In the 1930s, France’s Voisin and Delahaye carmakers produced some of the most stunning vehicles ever built. Gabriel Voisin, who built World War I bombers, brought his understanding of fighter-plane technology to the designs of his cars, including the C-27, an extraordinary open-roof coupe. Delahayes drew international acclaim for their exemplary coachwork; the company’s Type 135, with its elliptical shapes that foreshadowed the famed French teardrop form, was particularly popular. This month, examples of these and other cars from the two manufacturers will make their way to Monterey, Calif., to take their places as the featured marques at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (pebblebeachconcours.net), a display of about 175 of the world’s rarest and most expensive vintage automobiles. The Concours will cap a range of events during Monterey Car Week, from August 14 through 20, including our own Robb Report Salon, an exhibit of Rolls-Royces, Spyders, Michael Beaudry jewelry, and premium Scotch malts, among other luxury goods. . . . Golf may not be a topmost concern for many who visit Pebble Beach this month, but followers of that sport might consider the People vs. the Pros tournament (peoplevsthepros.com), which takes place August 19 through 22 at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. During a 54-hole event, amateur golfers will compete for the chance to challenge either two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen (in the 18–49 age group) or Champions Tour pro Gary McCord (ages 50 and older). Following these final 18-hole games, which will be broadcast on ESPN, the winner in each age group will donate his $50,000 purse to a charity of his choice. As of mid-June, the tournament still was offering slots for amateurs at $2,500 each. . . .
