Some 700 Stradivarius stringed instruments have survived since

Italy’s Stradivari family crafted them about 300 years ago. On October 7, about

a dozen of these will be played by members of the Tokyo String Quartet and other

recording artists at a farm in Rappahannock County, Va., owned by New York

Philharmonic music director Lorin Maazel. The maestro’s Châteauville Foundation (www­.chateauville.org) has sponsored performances at the farm’s

Castleton Theatre for 10 years, and this year it launched a residency program

for young artists.
