FrontRunners: Amazing Properties

The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach (www.ritzcarlton.com) once was a fairly formal place, with dark wood walls, overlarge seating, and gold rope on the lobby chandeliers. But a $60 million makeover has transformed the 310-room resort into a property you might expect to find in Bali, with its palette of cream, sage, and blue and open spaces facing the ocean. The most dramatic new feature is a 3,000-square-foot oceanfront terrace that contains sculpture gardens and water fountains. The property’s 42 seaside suites are priced at about $1,900 per night in high season.

The new $310 million, 424-room InterContinental Boston (www.intercontinentalboston.com) is an astonishing sight, with its two 22-story towers billowing over the adjacent waterfront like mainsails straining against the wind. The U-shaped, pewter bar in the hotel’s mahogany-walled RumBa lounge provides a view of the site of the Boston Tea Party, and in good weather, guests can enjoy dinner in the InterContinental Gardens, a two-acre promenade on Fort Point Channel.
